- What does the name "Portrait" mean and how did you get it?
- When we were deciding what to call ourselves, we thought of PORTRAIT because as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. The difference between a picture and a portrait is that you snap a picture, and you may or may not see all the details. A portrait
is intricately detailed by the painter, and every detail is known. So when we say we want to be a Portrait of God's love, we are referring to His attributes through our lives, hoping that they reflect as near a mirror-image as possible.
- How much do you charge?
- We come primarily on a love-offering basis, with no minimum. All we ask for is a pet-free place to stay (because of Tina's severe allergies to cats, dogs, and birds) for the night before a morning concert, or for the night of an evening concert for Tina and me, and our 2 children. There are times when an offering isn't feasible or wanted, (such as youth events, schools, colleges, or just because the church doesn't want to take another offering), and for those situations, we have an honorarium goal, but not a requirement. In over a decade years of ministry, we have never turned down a concert or worship service because of money, and work hard at figuring out how to best use our finances to go wherever anyone wants us. For a long while now, we have entrusted our finances to God, and He has been faithful to meet our needs.
- Do you do any other ministry beside concerts?
- Yes. We are here to serve the Church, not make demands of it. We do as little, or as much, as a church wants. We have done as few as 1 or 2 songs, and as much as 2 hours. Also, we lead worship, teach worship conferences, train sound engineers and install new sound equipment as necessary, help with missions conferences, and mentor other music ministers. We also travel frequently to Europe to keep current with the needs and uniquenesses of ministering with and to Europeans.
- What does your "target" audience look like?
- We really don't target a specific age group. When we know a church is musically more conservative or more contemporary, we tailor our program accordingly. The thing most people, young and old, say about our concerts is that they appreciated that there was something for everyone - a mix of our own original songs and a few well-loved hymns, and real life stories and experiences to challenge and encourage. A Portrait concert is something the entire family can enjoy together.
